In layman’s language, a family refers to a group of two or more people who live together and are united by the ties of birth, marriage, or adoption. However, some researchers give a broader definition by describing the family as an attitude or an identification with or among a group of individuals who support and nurture one another (Click & Parker, 2012). To be specific, families play a critical role in shaping who individuals become (Meadows, 2015). From whichever perspective one looks at the definition of family, there seems to be a consensus when describing the forms of family. Observers are unanimous that there are three fundamental forms of family, which are nuclear, extended, and single-parent families. A nuclear family refers to a household that consists of parents and children dwelling together. Some of the advantages of a nuclear family include financial stability and consistency in raising children. On the other hand, an extended family encompasses a nuclear family and other relatives, such as grandparents, uncles, and aunts, living together. One of the outstanding advantages of an extended family is enhanced social support for each other. Finally, a single-parent family refers to a family where a parent of either gender cares for one or more dependent children without the support of a spouse. Often, single-parent families result from the death of a spouse, separation, or out of choice.
