The United States (US) continues to experience challenges in delivering quality, accessible, and affordable healthcare. According to Gibbons and Shaikh (2017), some key trends that characterize the current US healthcare system include rising costs of care and insurance coverage issues. The US must improve its healthcare delivery system to avoid running into deeper issues in the future. Some of the improvements it can implement include a single-payer system and reimbursement reforms to increase the adoption of home-based care.
The current US healthcare delivery system can benefit from a single-payer system, which has been shown to reduce the costs associated with the consumption of healthcare services. According to Crowley et al. (2020), a single-payer system involves a system where a single public entity finances the cost of healthcare. A single-payer system is more cost-effective than a multi-payer system, which the US currently uses. Scheinker et al. (2021) posit that a single-payer system is associated with lower administrative costs.
