One of the top domestic issues facing India is immigration. For instance, due to war in neighboring Afghanistan, many Afghan citizens flee to neighboring India in such of refuge. In other countries, religious persecution leads to citizens' continuous fleeing from their homelands and into India. For instance, in Pakistan, citizens that practice Buddhism has had to seek refuge in India due to religious persecution in their country. The immigration issue in India is aggravated even further by a lack of a socially and religiously inclusive law. For instance, the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) states that only Sikhs, Jains, Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan will be treated as non-illegal immigrants. The majority of citizens from each of these three countries are Muslims. Therefore, based on this provision, it is clear that the bill discriminates based on religion.
Another top domestic issue facing India is its population size. For instance, in the last five years, the number of people leaving Pakistan and entering India has increased by 20%. There is a significant Pakistani presence in India, and unless India introduces stricter measures, its population will continue to grow. Also, there is a need for population control in India for the country to remain sustainable. For instance, in China, the government introduced a strategy for population control that has seen its population reduce and its economy improve. The lack of a proper registration system also gives a poor reflection of India's population size.
