Growing up with an Incarcerated Parent
The existing environment is pretty deterministic to an individual's well-being, development, growth, and progress. Children growing up with incarcerated parents may often have unique life experiences and perspectives. What are the attitudes, perceptions, and experiences amongst children having incarcerated parents? Brofenbrenner (1994) postulates that the overall ecological system is critical to understanding how human development and growth occurs. Bronfenbrenner's (1994) proposition is fundamental to dissecting circumstances involving children growing up with incarcerated parents. The two videos illustrate the criminal justice systems that are costly to the U.S and its citizens.
The issue of parental incarceration amongst children is increasingly becoming of great concern. The number of children whose parents have been incarcerated is increasing. For instance, in 2007, more than 1.7 million children had their parents incarcerated in the American federal prison system, which represents an 80 percent rise since 1991 (Becki Brunnquell,2013), where Professor Michael Stoll via ReasonTV attributes such as increased incarceration, not to the rise in crimes but rather increasing sentencing in the criminal justice system as a result of policy changes at state and federal level (Reason TV,2013). African American children are 7.5-fold more likely to be victims of parental incarnations than their counterparts, and children are even more affected when their mother is incarcerated. It is worrying to note that about 75 % of the prison inmates are mothers, and about 50-60 % of incarcerated partners do not receive visits of their children (Becki Brunnquell,2013). Jaime (2019) advocates for enhanced children's visitations at prions to see and interact with their parents. Thus, substantial children experienced the adversity of their mothers being incarcerated. Why do such children receive care? How do such children get their motherly and fatherly love and guidance? These children are often stigmatized as a result of parental incarceration, leading to increased social isolation and internalization of this problem amongst such children. Children with incarcerated parents often feel isolated and shamed. According t...
