Confreg is a hexadecimal 16-bit software configuration register found in a CISCO router. It controls the router's functions ranging from password recovery, booting (into ROMmon, NetBoot), content processing of startup configuration files, controlling broadcast addresses, to loading operating software from ROM et cetera. Confreg is usually a default value that instructs a CISCO router on which software to boot. Some examples include (a) 0x2102 (the factory default confreg value) which boots in Normal to load NVRAM`s (Startup Config) contents (D, 2011).
Other examples are (b) 0x2142, which boots from Flash without utilizing NVRAM's (Startup Config) contents. It is vital in password discovery, (c) 0x2141 boots from boot prom without using NVRAM's contents, (d) 0x141 disables the Break key to bypass the NVRAM configuration, and boots the default system image from ROM.
