The reading that stood out for me was “Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples and Childhood Sexual Abuse Survivors” by Heather B. MacIntosh and Susan Johnson. The reading caught my attention because of its objective to help victims of emotional abuse in families recover from the experience. Many people suffer silently from the sexual abuse experience either in their marriages or from a close relative. As the author suggests, many people fail to enjoy their marriages because of the trauma of suffering from the abuse. In most cases, these members are ashamed to reveal their experiences to their partners, leading to further problems.
Emotional healing is the most important aspect of recovery for such an individual. A focus on the psychological aspect facilitates alleviating other symptoms, including anxiety, anger, depression, re-victimization, self-mutilation, sexual problems, and substance abuse challenges that a victim may face. When a person suffers emotional damage, they become exposed to various challenges that may interfere with their personal relationship with other people. Understanding the role of emotional therapy in this recovery process will provide significant insights to medical and psychological researchers who handle such cases.
