The first insight is that the press can be a force for good rather than a reporting tool. In Luo’s (2020) article, the discussions, questions, and outcomes by the Hutchins commission were most interesting. The commission was made up of a multidisciplinary team, none of whom were journalists, thus giving challenging thoughts and ideas. First, they challenged the press’s participation in fueling discord in society, mostly when society faced a political challenge. Thus often fell back to the company’s profitability. Despite the Hutchins commission meeting numerous times, they discovered that maintaining a responsible and free press was quite challenging. The same challenge faces society and the press today. Certain media outlets choose to promote specific candidates.
The second insight is the debate on objectivity. The piece by Haili Balssinggame (2020) highlights an interesting question. Unlike the early days of the press as presented by the Free and Responsible Press Hutchins commission, no one can simply put up a print shop today. Their reports must be cross-edited before being published under major and renowned media platforms. For example, during Trump’s campaign for president, CNN lost a lot of viewership from the White, especially Republican voters, for focusing on Democrats. Fox news gained a significant amount of viewership due to its Republican rhetoric.
