Dyson Headphones: Three Questions
1. Question 1
Dyson headphones reinvents headphone use, application and development. Three key features stand out for Dyson headphones in addition to standard headphone features and functionalities: air filter, mouthpiece/nozzle, and wearability/disposability. The air filter is, primarily, company’s central innovation offering users a new way to filter in or out air, particularly in more polluted communities and cities (Knowles, 2010).
The mouthpiece/nozzle component, placed within headphones ear cups, enables users to fit in or out incoming air (Turner, 2020). In lieu of a face mask, Dyson’s mouthpiece/nozzle enables users to mount, or dispose of, a wearable makeshift face mask, particularly in more cramped areas.
The wearability/disposability feature is, of course, Dyson’s most interesting innovation. By enabling users to use, or not, built-in mouthpieces, users are not bound, or stigmatized, by a face mask covering up most of user’s face, not to mention difficulty in breathing (Porter, 2020). 2. Question 2
Two main concerns arise, however, from using Dyson’s new headphones. First, new headphones could, ironically, be incubators for, instead of being a protection against, pollution. By having built-in mouthpieces/nozzles, different forms of air pollution and infection, including bacteria, could be transmitted to user’s ears.
