Global mindset refers to individual attributes such as communication skills, individual qualities, and actionable knowledge that helps a global leader influence a multicultural group, individuals, or an organization. Leaders with a global mindset have the know-how, the personality, and the business savviness necessary to engage an interconnected and highly competitive community. Three profiles characterize global mindset leaders. First, intellectual capital refers to a leader’s ability to master global business and its wider macro environment. Second is the psychological capital which refers to a leader’s emotional energy, willingness to engage in a global space and capacity for self-reflection. Finally, social capital refers to a leader’s ability to act in ways that allow them to build beneficial relationships with people from different parts of the world. In a multicultural world like today, having a global mindset is highly helpful. Every leader seeking to play a global role, for example, in transnational organizations, must engage and influence people from different parts of the world.
Becoming a global-minded leader without stepping foot outside one country is possible. People can grow or develop their global mindset in different ways. First, gaining a desirable self-awareness involves knowing one’s own culture and biases. Secondly, one can gain a global perspective by developing curiosity about other people's cultures, reading about places, building relationships with people from different cultures, and mastering new leadership skills, especially those that will help one become global-minded. Thirdly, one can be global-minded by being open-minded and flexible. Global-minded leaders realize that things are done differently globally, and it is crucial always to adapt and stay flexible. Finally, one becomes global-minded by practicing multiculturalism and learning new languages. New languages increase one’s cultural perspectives and prepare one for international experiences.
