Demographics

Institution:
The aspect of the united states like most other developed nations that comes with wealthier population is longevity. Ironically, as the population grows, majority of the people are ageing. This is a phenomenon that is highly related to the fact that most of the families now prefer fewer or no children, while they enjoy longer life spans. By 205, the US is estimated to have people above the age of 65, representing more than 21%(Weisenthal, 2014). This is a major shift in population demographics as witnessed from the current trends. In places like China, the same is true. However, for China the change in the demographics with majority being the aging generation is due to the one child policy accented to as a result of high birth rates(Wang, 2012).
For businesses this means that there will be less young people to employ, with majority of the work force comprising off aging staff. This means that they will have to support more people for the pension plans and health care services(WSJ, 2013). With reference to the population to whom they offer their goods and services, there will also be some major shifts. Much of the clients will be aged and thustheir preferences are bound to change. As such, companies will be forced to redefine their focus onto the aging population with minimal emphases on products and services targeted at the youths(WSJ, 2014).
As would be expected with this kind of trend, the fertility of both the Chinese population and that of the US is steadily falling with that of the Chinese falling at an alarming rate(Chang, 2013). This will affect the number of children that are born in any given population group. For businesses, this means that the future mostly holds an aged population shift. This means that businesses have to develop strategies to shift their marketing plans(Dyson, 2013).
