Applied and Pure Research and the Importance of Business Research

Coursework Instructions:

1.What is the difference between applied research and basic or pure research? Use a decision about how a salesperson is to be paid, by commission or salary, and describe the question that would guide applied research versus the question that would guide pure research.
2. The new management of an old established company is facing problem. The company is currently unprofitable and is, in the management’s opinion, operating inefficiently. The company sells a wide line of equipment and supplies to the dairy industry. Some items it manufactures and many wholesales to diaries, creameries, and similar plants. Because the industry is changing in several ways, survival will be more difficult in the future. In particular, many equipment companies are bypassing the wholesalers and selling directly to dairies. In addition, many of the independent dairies are being taken over by large food chains.
How might business research help the new management make the right decision.

It uses the insights gained from pure or basic research to narrow down the scope of the study to solve a problem at hand (Kothari, 2004). Hence, basic and applied research differ in terms of time, scope, and approach.

The above research questions encourage engaging with broader theoretical literature to identify the theories of employee motivation in relation to the psychological and economic factors associated with each compensation structure using an exploratory approach.
Applied Research
* Which compensation structures between salary and commission can help the Company maximize the performance of its salespersons and drive optimal outcomes for the business and employees?
The above question specifically deals with the nature of the current alternatives and aims to solve an immediate problem. It is time-bound as the Company has to make the decision within a reasonable time.
Answer to Question Two
The case indicates that the ongoing changes in the industry are affecting the equipment manufacturer...
