There are a few swift cats left in the world today. Cheetahs are increasingly becoming endangered because about 10,000 years ago, there was a serious reduction in the numbers of cheetahs, and since then those that survived have reproduced through inbreading (Starr & McMillan, 2010). This method of reproduction leads to very little variation and the presence of alleles with reduced sperm counts among males. Inbreading also impairs resistance to some infections among the remaining cheetahs (Starr & McMillan, 2010). There are suggestions that “gene therapy” program might be able to address this genetic problem and see the cheetahs back to their initial numbers before the massive loss.
