Case Study Instructions:

This assignment relates to EPAS 2, 3, 6a, 7a, 8a, and 9a and the Knowledge, Skills, Values, and Cognitive/Affective Processes dimensions. This assignment provides you with the opportunity to apply social work concepts important to practice with individuals, utilizing the strengths perspective. You will develop a paper which applies the social work problem-solving process, the strengths perspective, and the generalist social work perspective. Paper is to be typed double spaced, with a maximum of ten (10) pages plus a separate References page in APA 7th edition format. You are expected to integrate by using in-text citations in APA format of at least four (4) recent scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles, including your texts and other required readings for the course.

Select an individual client from your caseload at your field site. This should be someone you are currently working with. This client should be culturally different in at least one significant way from you (e.g., national origin, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender expression), or a member of an oppressed, marginalized, or at-risk population group. Pick someone from whom you can acquire substantial knowledge of them and their situation, including their family (as they define it). This client should be someone who you expect to be seeing for several months. Be sure to consult with your field instructor to aid in the selection of this client. (In case you are in a facility where you only do intake assessments, you may still collect all information needed for this paper and the family paper.)

When presenting demographic information about your client, you must protect their confidentiality by disguising all identifying information. A thorough bio-psycho-social-cultural-spiritual (BPSCS) assessment must be included. Your paper also will include some basic factual information about your field agency

Identifying Information
Joe is a 35-year-old male of Spanish ethnicity, currently unemployed, and has been for an extended period due to his addiction and legal issues. Joe's housing situation is presently within a residential drug treatment facility where he is undergoing treatment as part of his mandated stay. He lives in a shared residential facility with other individuals in recovery. The facility is in a suburban neighborhood with a supportive and controlled environment conducive to healing. Joe's marital status is single. He reports no current involvement with any community or religious groups. Joe's referral source is the county jail where he was incarcerated due to his heroin addiction and related legal issues. He was referred for residential drug treatment as a part of his court-mandated sentence. Joe's referral is primarily to address his severe substance use disorder, related to prior arrests for drug possession and theft that led to his current incarceration. This legal involvement is a result of his substance abuse issues and the behaviors associated with it.
The assessment is primarily based on interviews with Joe during his intake and subsequent sessions. Information from other involved parties, such as the county jail officials, Joe's family, and fellow residents at the facility, has also been considered. Joe's self-report during these interviews reveals a history of significant substance abuse that began in his late teens and progressed to heroin addiction. Observations made by the facility's staff and clinical team indicate that Joe has been actively participating in the treatment program and demonstrating a commitment to his recovery. Records of Joe's legal case and prior medical history have been reviewed to gain a comprehensive understanding of his background and circumstances. There are no video-taped sessions, as Joe's consent was not obtained. Joe's family members were interviewed to provide additional insight into his pre-addiction history and social support system.
Presenting Problem
Joe initially presented his problem during the intake interview, describing a deep struggle with heroin addiction as the primary reason for seeking assistance. He conceded that his substance abuse had reached a point where it was disrupting his daily life and general mental state. Joe expressed emotions of hopelessness, despair, and sadness that had caused havoc his addiction had wreaked upon his life. He admitted to using narcotics to cope with emotional suffering caused by a difficult childhood filled with family violence, neglect, and instability. This revelation allowed the assessor to understand the underlying factors contributing to his substance abuse.
Regarding individuals involved in Joe's problem, his younger sister, Maria, emerged as a
