Group influence can be a significant tool to use when trying to convince others. That is why I am a supporter of democracy, particularly voting since it enables people to choose what they want. However, some individuals cast their votes based on the number of people supporting the idea or a specific choice. I have been in a team, where many individuals were persuaded to select the leader based on his popularity among members, but not his capability to pursue the given responsibilities.
In some ways, group influence can be caused by the peripheral route to persuasion. Indeed, it entails a less judicious but careful process that entails considering and weighing the arguments’ strengths by responding using simple and irrelevant cues that make people decide without thinking critically (Aronson, 2012). In the scenario at hand, involving selecting the team leader, I was obliged to follow the majority decision.
