After in-depth exploration of the case study, I opinionate that developmental theory by Donald super and social learning theory apply best to the client. Under the developmental theories, the developmental self-concept theory addresses the client’s situation because he already has identified and defined himself. Self-concept regards how someone sees themselves and in turn this defines the role one has to play in life. John had always thought he would play professional football, which is a step towards self-concept. For one to believe they can undertake something, they must also be confident in their abilities.
The second is the Social learning theory that influences career choice in four dynamics. Either by Genetic endowments, special abilities, environmental conditions and events, learning experiences and the task approach. From the case study, John’s performance is 3.6 out of 4.0, which is outstandingly excellent. This is one way John showcases his special abilities and the fact that he is passionate about mathematics a subject not many students understand. Further, John has played the piano since he was in elementary school, the possible cause for his interest in music, he is a mentor and also involved in community service. One person doing well in different fields indicates possession of special abilities that can help in settling on a career choice.
John’s information is precise and well presented, however, there would be need to know what he spends most of his time doing. Apparently, it is evident that John is talented and all rounded. Knowing where he spends most of his time, could be a guidance to identify his major interest and help him eliminate the career choice confusion better.
