Medical Model and Biopsychosocial Model Case Study
Compare and contrast these two models(Medical model and Biopsychosocial Model ) as they relate to the issues presented within the case study. Include your perspective about how “integrated” the two approaches are. Is one better than the other? Which approach do you anticipate will have a more positive outcome for the patient? Support your argument.

Case Study: Gerard
Gerard is a 49 year old attorney, referred to you by his PCP because of increasing symptoms of anxiety – rapid heartbeat, sweaty palms, hyperventilation, inability to sleep, racing thoughts. He has a very stressful job, working up to 60 hours a week for a large law firm in town. He is married, but he and his wife separated recently because he is never at home to help care for his three young children, ages 6, 4 and 6 months.
Recent blood work and other diagnostic tests done in the PCP office revealed that Gerard is at higher than average risk for some type of cardiac event. He has high cholesterol and high blood pressure, and there were some abnormalities on his EKG.
Routine screening with the SBIRT established that Gerard is drinking at least four mixed drinks 4 to 5 nights a week (“to relax”) and is smoking marijuana (“to help me sleep”) almost every night. On the average, he is sleeping about 3 to 4 hours per night.
Gerard comes from a family of very high achievers. His mother is a cardiac surgeon, and his father was a federal judge until he died suddenly of a heart attack at age 50 (when Gerard was 12). His older brother is a famous author and his younger sister is the mayor of the small town in the Midwest where they all grew up.

Medical Model and Biopsychosocial Model Case Study
Health psychology examines different ways of promoting health, preventing illnesses, and maintaining public health. It explores the biological, psychosocial, and social factors that influence the response and behavior of people regarding their health conditions. There are two generally accepted health models, namely, medical and biopsychosocial models. The medical model requires a disease to be fully accounted for by deviations from the norm of measurable biological variables. It does not consider the influence of psychological, social, and behavioral factors on ill-health. The biopsychosocial approach focuses on the perceptions of individuals about their symptoms as well as the influence of society and the environment on their health status. In the case of Gerald, the medical model will focus on the cause of his health condition rather than the contributory factors. However, a biopsychosocial approach will be based on the assumption that there are multiple causes of ill-health, with many varying symptoms.
The two models provide different explanations about the cause of Gerald’s anxiety-related symptoms. From a medical perspective, a disease is caused by biological factors such as chemical imbalances, bacterial, viruses, and genetic predisposition (Stanhope & Straussner, 2017). Therefore, Gerald's anxiety disorders can be associated with either or more of the following biological factors; high cholesterol, high blood pressure, EKG abnormalities, and alcohol and substance abuse. The biopsychosocial model stipulates that there are other contributing factors in ill-health, other than biological factors. Psychological aspects such as behavior and beliefs as well as social factors such as unemployment and relationships play a critical role in the general health of an individual. Apart from the biological factors, the cause of Gerald's anxiety complications may inclu...
