Case Study Instructions:

PURPOSE: This assignment will incorporate several aspects of the course and allow you an opportunity to apply these topics and skills to a fictitious patient. In addition you will have the opportunity to see how rounds might be conducted in medical or behavioral medicine settings.

You will be assigned a fictitious patient referral from a treating physician.  Once you receive your assigned patient, the first step will be to do some background reading on the medical condition they are presenting with. This can come from course material and outside scholarly resources (book chapters or peer-reviewed journal articles).

Your job will be to develop an initial conceptualization of the patient and thoughts about a potential treatment plan. There is a page limit of 2 pages (try to keep within 1 page).

Your case conceptualization should include the following:

  • Patient demographic statement (5 points)
  • Biopsychosocial formulation of vulnerabilities for presenting problem (15 points)
  • Strengths (5 points)

Please also include a brief statement of potential treatment goals (2-3 sentence max). (10 points)

Patient SS is a female of Asian ethnicity and aged 22 years. She has a medical history of Cystic fibrosis identified during newborn screening and sweat tests. Biopsychosocial Formulation

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disorder that runs based on family history. One health ecological model concern is the cultural-independent viral and microbial communities. The complexity of this risk factor increases the patient’s susceptibility to CF airway infection. Therefore, during the intervention, it will be essential to extend the focus to secondary biological effects (Bell et al., 2020). This approach will help examine the broader health effects, such as allergies, toxic and acute effects, and infectious diseases.
Psychological Risk Factors
Despite Cystic fibrosis being a genetic disorder, Patient SS continues to reveal significant psychological risk factors. The issues range from depression and blood pressure to anxiety and non-adherence (Fonseca et al., 2020). A study by Fonseca et al. (2020) contends that these elements are fundamental in increasing Cystic fibrosis, especially among young patients.
