Through strategic planning, the senior executives of an institution are able to anticipate and predict what the future will be like. A good vision statement and mission statement should be succinct, which makes it easy for managers and leaders to communicate to their employees. Extremely short or very long statements are ineffective.
Clarity
Mission and vision statements should provide a clear and achievable goal. They should avoid use of complex words and jargons that may impede understanding.
Abstract and challenging
Effective mission and vision statements set abstract and yet challenging goal. The goal should not be too concrete but focus on being more abstract.
States the organization’s purpose
Effective mission and vision statements provide an idea of the existence of an organization. Therefore, they should not be too general statements.
Future focused
Excellent mission and vision statements should describe an organization’s long term goal or state that it desires to achieve in the future. They should describe the organization’s on-going actions towards achieving the organization’s goal.
