Other Symptoms of Groupthink Present in the Case
Each individual has unique reasoning that may prompt one to engage in an activity or stay away. However, groupthink is the opposite, with group members sharing a common perspective over a personal opinion. In other words, groupthink orients a group’s action to achieve a definite direction. Mind guard is among the symptoms that define groupthink present in the case. This symptom is evident when a member decides to downplay the group’s decision, especially when it contradicts its perception. Mind guard is apparent when one client downplayed a risky event where Ray acted as God, demanding some participants to commit a mock suicide because she feared ruining the experience (Johnson, 2019, p.365). Another symptom is isolation, where members were isolated and guided by an influential authority figure. This move was to make members reason in on accord even what was being done was wrong. Morality has also stood out as an eminent symptom of groupthink in the case. Despite some members knowing that one was preparing for serious health consequences without eating or drinking, they ignored and continued with the experience.
Effectiveness of Groupthink
Indeed groupthink poses a greater danger to spiritual groups than other groups. This assertion is fortified because groupthink tends to have stronger convictions, and their actions are unquestionable. Besides, it is a threat for spiritual groups as having a contradictory opinion is considered an offence (Johnson 2019).
