In some cases, entrepreneurs create new products or services based on their favorite food or behavior. In the case at hand, Candace Tierney came up with the idea of introducing an ingredient for ice cream after eating frozen oatmeal dessert for some time. Tierney ate her frozen dessert every morning, which is the reason why she started paying attention to how she can commercialize her idea. The founder of Oat & Mill Food Company said that she was tired of eating the usual ice cream products made from soy, almond, or coconut. Tierney started Oat & Mill in 2015 after obtaining a marketing degree at Ottawa University (Robinson, 2017). She says that it was not simple to start and run the firm since she made her frozen oat dessert and marketed them online. As such, Tierney sold some products over the Internet and delivered others physically on a door-to-door basis.
In the summer of 2015, Tierney had to try out multiple recipes, some of which she introduced by following her customers’ feedback. In 2017, the founder of Oat & Mill said that many people developed an interest in her products, which motivated her to tweak existing commodities to ensure that consumers were satisfied entirely. Oat & Mill’s great boost came from the use of Canadian varieties of oat and milling specifications of the raw materials to produce the creamy ingredient. Despite all the struggles Tierney encountered in establishing and marketing her company; currently, she has 28 stores in Ottawa. Oat & Mill offers chocolate mint, coffee biscotti, spice and banana walnut, and chocolate peanut butter. In 2016, Tierney’s company won the Premier Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence (Robinson, 2017).
