Balancing the benefits, risks and costs of medical decisions is considered to improve patient outcomes, while respecting beneficence.

Respect for patient autonomy requires respecting people’s preferences, but the doctor ought to advise the patient to allow the patient to make informed judgment. Since James is a minor, his parents make decisions on his behalf and when they have access to information they ought to make the best judgment. However, their religious beliefs have resulted in the delay of treatment.
