Skill Model Approach
The skill model method is a skill-based model of leadership fashioned by Michael Mumford and others (Mumford et al., 2000). The system is leader-based, and it endows five components of successful leadership. For example, there are leadership outcomes, environment influences, personal attributes, career experience, and competencies. The skill model approach emphasizes the link between performance and a leader's aptitude. On the other hand, leadership abilities can be advanced through subjective the leaders to training and development programs. AMREF presents a typical department exhibiting skill model approach (Katz, 1955). The AMREF is has been the testbed for an overarching concept of leadership established on problem-solving skills in the army department leading in the skilled approach to influential leaders. There are numerous ways in which the skill mode approach is can be applied. I will use an incident I experienced in Yemen while helping the injured soldiers and civilians.
Application of Skill Model Approach
A few months ago, our team made of trained healthcare professionals was almost pinned down by Al-Qaeda in Kabul City because our medical stock was almost over. The leader realized the issue and notified the medical officer to resupply the team as soon as possible because they were advancing and most of the soldiers and civilians were injured. Our leaders directed a group of 7 nurses and doctors, with me included, to resupply the team with medicine within seven hours. We understood the essence of time immediately began the journey to travel by air to the barrack and carry medicine and other supplies. Unfortunately, some of my team members were not equipped to handle medical supplies. Despite that problem, we could not let our fellow comrades in the battle die due to injuries. Our head doctor was obligated to develop a solution by employing skills based on the issue. For example, he devised a plan to reach the city without being ambushed by the opposing forces. Besides, we were heavily loaded with medical supplies for our injured and sick soldiers at the battle. Fortunately, we managed to beat all odds by working to resupply soldiers with medicine.
Furthermore, all of us understood that the insurgence is a bit predictable. Our team trusts the doctor in charge of us. We believed in his motivation, visions, and willingness to guide us through stressful situations. His advice and morale enabled the team to resupply the medical resources within the set time limit with no casualties (Northouse, 2015. Finally, the Kabul mission became successful. We also managed to treat and control spread of infections in some cities.
