Report and Analysis: Executive Shirt Company
* Purpose
* Compute the following quantities for the current production process as well as for Mike’s and Ike’s plans, assuming the plans are implemented as described in the case.
* Compare the two plans, in terms of both regular shirt production and custom-shirt production. Based on your analysis, what is your recommendation for Dwight Collier?
* Introduction
The sales for the Executive Shirt Company constitute only a few colors and basic styles. The enterprise possesses a limited number of shirt varieties for production. However, it has large batches for each type of shirt. In the case study, Mr. Dwight Collier, the manager at the Executive Shirt Company, has plans of introducing customized shirts in the production facility since they can fetch 75 percent of the price of regular shirts (Hammond, 1996). Currently, the company manufactures 16,000 shirts every month and has plans for manufacturing 2,000 customized shirts without hampering its current production. In the case study, one of the assumptions is that the company lacks specialization since all the workers perform the tasks involved in the production.
* Materials
* Cutting machine
* Computer
* Fabric
* Methods
Executive Shirt Company has a single cutting machine controlled by a computer. The device is capable of cutting sixty layers of cloth at the same time. Besides, it can cut eight patterns of fabric simultaneously. The entire cutting process takes a total of thirty minutes irrespective of the number of layers or patterns. However, the setup time is quite significant in the production process. The organization takes 1.5 minutes to roll out a pair of cloth. Therefore, sixty layers of fabric would take ninety minutes in set up time. A total of four operators control the machine, thus being an indicator that the company uses its maximum capacity in producing sixty layers and eight patterns of cloth at a time. Accordingly, the company is capable of cutting 480 shirts in one run.
