Introduction
Health Level Seven International (HL7) is a non-profit organization that has developed numerous healthcare informatics interoperability standards so far. Experts at this organization tend to create a sustainable framework that ensures quick retrieval and integration of electronic health information. Since 1987, Health Level Seven International has played its role in strengthening the hospital information systems. Amazingly, HL7 is always forefront when it comes to increasing awareness among healthcare professionals regarding informatics standards and their role in the healthcare industry (Salodkar & Kulkarni, 2017).
Challenges in the Current System
As of now, one of the major challenges is how to effectively and quickly exchange the health-related information between two or more hospitals with an aim to empower the overall healthcare system. Retrieval and proper management of data are two other prominent challenges. It is a common observation that a patient’s healthcare record remains in the digital silo, which makes it impossible for health experts to transfer the data between two hospitals safely and securely. The problem, however, can be solved if the silos are eliminated and data is accessed in other forms or ways. It will eventually help surgeons and nurses to provide timely, effective, affordable and quality treatment to their patients (Reshmi & Nandakumar, 2016).
Another visible challenge is the lack of communication. The 300-bed facility is plagued with numerous challenges of coordination and communication. It looks like the department heads are not ready to cooperate with each other and instead have restricted themselves to their departmental matters. As an informatics director, I have accepted the challenge of improving the communication and coordination among all departments like pharmacy, laboratory and the admission department. For this purpose, I have decided to employ the Collective Data Entry (CDE) which will help share clinical data without any issue. A querying technique, called Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), is likely to be tried because I feel that it will help improve the coordination, cooperation, and communication, as well as will make it easy for the department heads to exchange clinical data with one another (Muslim, et al., 2017).
As part of this technique, the sender will be able to forward the patients’ information to others using an encrypted code, and the receiver will have access to the same code and same program to be able to read the message. Thirdly, the laboratory has problems with delivering timely results and discussing the matter with doctors and nurses. Similarly, the pharmacy department has challenges with making medications available without any delay. Due to these issues, most of the patients are unable to recover from the diseases quickly. Clinicians have been seen using the bed-board for locating patients, and this continuously delays the physician from visiting patients on time. Almost all of these problems can be solved using the EMR system (Varna & Jose, 2014).
