After world war II, poverty, dislocation, and unemployment became rampant in Western Europe. The United States feared that these conditions would provide a fertile ground for the communist parties in Western Europe to convince voters to elect them into government. Therefore, the United States advocated and implemented the European Recovery Program, which is also referred to as the Marshall plan. The recovery program was very successful and helped the Western European countries to recuperate from their economic hardships (Steil, 2018). The plan was also successful at thwarting the communist expansion.
