Case Study Discussion
Purpose
The purpose of the graded collaborative discussions is to engage faculty and students in an interactive dialogue to assist the student in organizing, integrating, applying, and critically appraising knowledge regarding psychopharmacology. Scholarly information obtained from credible sources as well as professional communication are required. Application of information to professional experiences promotes the analysis and use of principles, knowledge, and information learned and related to real-life professional situations. Meaningful dialogue among faculty and students fosters the development of a learning community as ideas, perspectives, and knowledge are shared.
Course Outcomes
This discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
CO3: Apply knowledge of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in prescribing psychopharmacotherapy. (PO 1)
CO4: Analyze factors pertinent to making the most effective drug selection for a client with a specific diagnosis in the mental health care setting. (POs 1, 2)
CO5: Identify the most commonly prescribed agents in the major psychopharmacologic drug classes. (POs 1, 2),
CO6: Analyze client indicators of therapeutic, ineffective, adverse responses and side effects to psychopharmacotherapy. (PO 1)

Major Depressive Disorder, Single Episode, Moderate with Anxious Distress
When a person is suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), they have a mood disorder that results in a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called clinical depression, this condition affects how they feel, think, and behave, and some of its outcomes include physical and emotional problems (Bains & Abdijadid, 2021). While the condition may occur once in a person's life, some people typically have multiple episodes with symptoms like prolonged feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and emptiness, angry outbursts and irritability, and loss of pleasure or interest in day-to-day activities, including hobbies, sports, or even sex. The current purpose paper aims for a medication that helps treat or manage the condition.
Questions
Select one drug to treat the diagnosis(es) or symptoms.
Sertraline, under the brand name Zoloft, is among the commonly used medications for the treatment of MDD. The drug is part of the class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Aside from MDD, the medication treats other mental conditions like PTSD, PMDD, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) among children, adolescents, and adults. In terms of working mechanism, the drug works within the brain by selectively inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin at the presynaptic neuron membrane. As a result, it increases serotonergic activity by engaging the serotonergic system (Huddart et al., 2020). This system regulates essential functions like appetite, cognitive function, sleep, and circadian rhythm.
Write the prescription in prescription format.
Sertraline comes in both tablets (25 mg, 50 mg, & 100 mg) liquid (20 mg/ml) forms. Thi...
