A Beautiful Mind starts in 1947 at Princeton University, where Russell Crowe (John Nash) emerges as a graduate learner, together with Josh Lucas (Martin Hansen), Adam Goldberg (Richard Sol), Jason Gray-Stanford (Ainsley), and Anthony Rapp (Bender). Despite Nash’s dismissive and arrogant behavior towards his classmates, he gets along with Paul Bettany (Charles), his roommate. I feel the film truly illustrates critical principles of mental illness recovery. Alicia (Nash’s wife) bears tremendous trauma and anguish as she supports him during the process of transcending mental illness. My initial reaction to the film was that it is truly incredible and beautiful. I liked the film because it portrays that one can recover from mental illness with courage and determination.
One of the positive symptoms of schizophrenia is that Nash’s hallucinations and delusions are inclined to find oneself. The manifestations are presented as a positive influence re-examining his self-care, such as whether he has eaten. One key negative symptom is that Nash isolates himself and does not adhere to social cues. Insulin Shock Therapy was used to treat madness. The side effects of this medication included oversedation, thought problems, and muscle stiffening (Howard). The insulin shock therapy had tremendous side effects on Nash. He wandered in Princeton University, scribbling on empty boards and staring at blank areas in the library.
