Case Study Discussion
Purpose
The purpose of the graded collaborative discussions is to engage faculty and students in an interactive dialogue to assist the student in organizing, integrating, applying, and critically appraising knowledge regarding psychopharmacology. Scholarly information obtained from credible sources as well as professional communication are required. Application of information to professional experiences promotes the analysis and use of principles, knowledge, and information learned and related to real-life professional situations. Meaningful dialogue among faculty and students fosters the development of a learning community as ideas, perspectives, and knowledge are shared.
Course Outcomes
This discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
CO3: Apply knowledge of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in prescribing psychopharmacotherapy. (PO 1)
CO4: Analyze factors pertinent to making the most effective drug selection for a client with a specific diagnosis in the mental health care setting. (POs 1, 2)
CO5: Identify the most commonly prescribed agents in the major psychopharmacologic drug classes. (POs 1, 2),
CO6: Analyze client indicators of therapeutic, ineffective, adverse responses and side effects to psychopharmacotherapy. (PO 1)
Due Date
Initial posts are due to the discussion board by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Instructor and peer responses are due by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Students must post on a minimum of two separate days. A 10% late penalty will be imposed for discussions posted after the deadline Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT, regardless of the number of days late. NOTHING will be accepted after 11:59 p.m. MT on Sunday (i.e., the student will receive an automatic 0).
Total Points Possible
This assignment is worth a total of 100 points.

Application of Course Knowledge
Select one drug to treat the diagnosis(es) or symptoms.
List medication class and mechanism of action for the chosen medication.
Write the prescription in prescription format.
Provide an evidence-based rationale for the selected medication using at least one scholarly reference. Textbooks may be used for additional references but are not the primary reference.
List any side effects or adverse effects associated with the medication.
Include any required diagnostic testing. State the time frame for this testing (testing is before medication initiation or q 3 months, etc.). Includes normal results range for any listed laboratory tests.
Provide a minimum of three appropriate medication-related teaching points for the client and/or family.
2. Integration of Evidence: The student post provides support from a minimum of one scholarly in-text citation in addition to the textbook.
3. Engagement in Meaningful Dialogue: The student responds to a student peer and course faculty to further dialogue.
Peer Response: The student responds substantively to at least one topic-related post by a student peer who discussed a different drug than the student’s initial post. A substantive post adds content or insights or asks a question that will add to the learning experience and/or generate discussion.
Faculty Response: The student responds substantively to at least one question by course faculty. The faculty question may be directed to the student, to another student, or the entire class.
4. Professionalism in Communication: The post presents information in a logical, meaningful, and understandable sequence, and is relevant to the discussion topic.
Grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation are accurate.
Good writing calls for the limited use of direct quotes. Direct quotes in discussions are to be limited to one short quotation (not to exceed 10 words). The quote must add substantively to the discussion.
5. Reference Citation: References have complete information as required by APA (0-1 errors). In-text citations included for all references, AND references are included for all in-text citations (0 errors).
6. Wednesday Participation Requirement: The student provides a substantive response to the graded discussion question(s) or topic(s), posted by the course faculty(not a response to a peer), by Wednesday,11:59 p.m. MT of each week.
7. Total Participation Requirement: The student provides at least three substantive posts (one to the initial question or topic, one to a student peer, and one to a faculty question) on two different days during the week.

Select one drug to treat the diagnosis(es) or symptoms
Schizophrenia is a severe mental health disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. The condition results in hallucinations, delusions, and disordered thinking & behavior that impairs daily functioning (Flanagan et al., 2020). While the cause of the condition is not yet known, researchers have pointed to a combination of brain chemistry, environmental factors, and genetics in developing the disease. Risk factors include a family history of the condition, pregnancy or birth complications, and use of psychoactive drugs in teen years and young adulthood. People with this condition require long-term treatment. Among the medications for the condition is Clozapine (Clozaril).
List the medication class and mechanism of action for the chosen medication
Clozapine is among the newer drugs for treating schizophrenia. These new groups of drugs for this condition are called atypical or second-generation. According to the FDA, Clozapine is the only approved medication for treating this condition when other treatments are not working. The drug is in a class of medications referred to as atypical antipsychotics. They are atypical because (Wagner et al., 2021) they produce minimal extrapyramidal effects (EPS) at clinically effective doses, treat both negative and positive signs & symptoms, and have a low propensity to lead to tardive dyskinesia (TD) with long term treatment.
Further, they are antipsychotic because they function by changing the activity of certain natural substances of the brain. The working mechanism primarily involves the blocking of serotonin and dopamine receptors. For instance, by reducing dopamine activity where it is too high, the medication helps to deal with symptoms like a hallucination.
Write a prescription in prescription format
Oral medication of Clozapine is the most effective. There is a range of tablets to this end, including 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg tablets. While the dosage can be increased over time, the starting dosage is 25 mg once a day or 12.5 mg twice a day.
Provide an evidence-based rationale for the selected medication
Different research studies have investigated the efficacy of Clozapine in treating schizophrenia and its symptoms. For example, Wagner et al. (20...
