Module 2 - Case
INPATIENT, OUTPATIENT, AND ANCILLARY SERVICES
Assignment Overview
At some point in your professional career, you may work within or alongside inpatient and outpatient settings. Working in these settings can be similar to working in two completely different “health care worlds.” What exactly are the differences between outpatient and inpatient medicine? Fundamentally, inpatient means checking into the hospital or care facility, while outpatient defines health care that can be administered without staying at the hospital. However, what has been prescribed above is the most basic terms of outpatient and inpatient services.
Case Assignment
Use the online library, required reading, and other resources to research and develop a more complete appreciation of the inpatient and outpatient settings. References should be no more than 5 years old. Websites should only be from reliable sources (only acceptable when accessing government sites).
Based on your findings, write a graduate-level comparative analysis of inpatient and outpatient services that clearly addresses the following:
Identify and describe inpatient settings and outpatient settings. Provide and explain at least two examples for each setting (e.g., Ambulatory Surgery Center vs. Rehabilitation Center).
Classify the typical services provided and key personnel between inpatient settings and outpatient settings.
Identify, describe, and evaluate a trend that is currently impacting inpatient and outpatient settings. These can be trends related to technology, supply and demand, political climate, regulatory, demographic changes, or patient care.
Analyze the trends, and thinking as a health care administrator, how do you capitalize on these trends to improve operation and bottom line performance? How can you mitigate the negative impact of the trends?
Length: 3-4 pages, not including the title or reference page(s).

Introduction
Today, there is an abundance of healthcare information that many patients strive to understand. Patients are interested daily in learning about various health problems and treatments. The irony is that there is still much information that patients need to understand about healthcare processes. An example of such is the difference between inpatient and outpatient care settings. Several people need to understand the difference and what they really mean. In an inpatient setting, patients check in to a hospital and are admitted for closer care. On the other hand, in an outpatient setting, patients receive care, for example, a physician consultation and laboratory testing, and leave the facility without admission (Lippi et al., 2022). While both inpatient and outpatient settings target to offer the required patient care, they are different in terms of the services offered, the type of healthcare providers in each setting, and healthcare costs.
Inpatient versus Outpatient Settings
An inpatient setting offers healthcare services where patients are admitted for further medical observation. In an inpatient setting, the patients typically present with severe and complex health conditions. A formal request by the attending doctor or physician must be made for a patient to be admitted to an inpatient setting. An example of an Inpatient setting is a maternity and childbirth center. In this setting, it becomes necessary to admit women giving birth and to care for them throughout labor and after birth. Some women may require a cesarean, requiring urgent admission and monitoring. Another example of an inpatient setting is the surgery and recovery center. A surgical procedure is critical and intensive; hence, patients need close observation and after-surgery care.
An outpatient setting offers healthcare services where patients do not need admission or close observation from healthcare professionals. In an outpatient setting, patients present with various health conditions that may require admission following a doctor’s assessment (Lippi et al., 2022). However, in most cases, patients in an outpatient setting usually leave after receiving care. Care usually offered in this setting includes physical assessments, ongoing treatments such as dialysis for renal failure patients or chemotherapy for cancer patients, and laboratory and imaging tests. An example of an outpatient setting is the X-ray and CT scan department, where imaging tests are carried out to assist with the doctor’s diagnosis. Another example is an ambulatory surgery center, where patients receive surgeries that do not require overnight observation or care.
Typical Services and Key Personnel
There are several services provided in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. These services differ in terms of the type and extent of care required. In the inpatient setting, the specific services provided include routine and complex surgeries (Brüngger et al., 2021). These critical health conditions require close monitoring and nurse availability, normal vaginal and cesarean birth, and rehabilitation services in the cas...
