The health care delivery techniques are constantly evolving and necessitate adjustments for the changing roles and responsibilities of assistive personnel as well as licensed healthcare professionals. The ability of the charge nurse to effectively assign, delegate, and supervise is central to a registered nurse’s (RN) core competencies. It is crucial to emphasize that jurisdictions have different regulations related to delegation, and it is the responsibility of all the on-duty nurses to establish what is allowed within their state. Whether to delegate or not delegate duties is anchored on the specific nurse’s perception and judgment concerning the patient’s condition, the degree of follow-up and supervision required after the task is delegated, and the professional competence of the individual to whom the task is assigned. This paper discusses the tasks delegated to UAPs, intraprofessional collaboration practices, and approaches to ensure patient safety during delegation practice, as well as the impact of effective delegation in supporting patient care and positive health outcomes within the medical unit.
Discuss what tasks could you delegate to the UAPs?
The unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) is an individual trained to work in the assistive capability to help the RN professional deliver client or patient care under supervision or as delegated by the registered professional nurse. Based on the case study scenario, I would delegate clinical and non-clinical roles. With respect to clinical activities, I would require the UAPs to assist in repositioning the patient and taking and recording the patient’s blood pressure, respiration, temperature, and pulse rate. I will also expect them to provide emotional as well as support services to the patient’s close friends and families, who would probably inquire about the patient’s condition. The non-clinical activities of the UAPs include keeping the medical unit clean and orderly and collecting specimens for medical examinations (Bakr, 2021). The delegation of these roles should be done considering each UAP’s areas of competence and experience to augment patient safety and health outcomes.
