Hallmark Assignment: Final Paper Overview
Concept: Delegation
Case Study
You are working the night shift on a medical unit and have been assigned charge nurse responsibilities. You are working with four RNs, one LPN, and two UAPs. A client becomes pulseless and is not breathing, and the nurse assigned to the client’s care calls a code. The nurse is occupied at this client’s bedside for 1.5 hours until the resuscitation effort is completed, and the client is transferred to the intensive care unit. This nurse also has four other assigned clients. In addition to the nurse assigned to care for the client requiring resuscitation, two of the other nurses working on your unit are assisting in the code.
Review the case study and write an essay (suggested length of 2–3 pages, excluding title page and reference page) in which you do the following:
1- Discuss what tasks could you delegate to the UAPs?
2- The LPN working on the unit is a new graduate and has been employed for only 4 weeks. How would you collaborate with this nurse when delegating tasks for completion?
3- Discuss how you will maintain the safety of the other clients on your unit while three nurses are occupied 4- with the client requiring resuscitation?
Explain how might effective delegation to other team members contribute to care of the clients on the unit? (Remember, this is not a question about the patient that is coded, but how you will handle the unit while you are short staffed).

Introduction
The health care delivery techniques are constantly evolving and necessitate adjustments for the changing roles and responsibilities of assistive personnel as well as licensed healthcare professionals. The ability of the charge nurse to effectively assign, delegate, and supervise is central to a registered nurse’s (RN) core competencies. It is crucial to emphasize that jurisdictions have different regulations related to delegation, and it is the responsibility of all the on-duty nurses to establish what is allowed within their state. Whether to delegate or not delegate duties is anchored on the specific nurse’s perception and judgment concerning the patient’s condition, the degree of follow-up and supervision required after the task is delegated, and the professional competence of the individual to whom the task is assigned. This paper discusses the tasks delegated to UAPs, intraprofessional collaboration practices, and approaches to ensure patient safety during delegation practice, as well as the impact of effective delegation in supporting patient care and positive health outcomes within the medical unit.
Discuss what tasks could you delegate to the UAPs?
The unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) is an individual trained to work in the assistive capability to help the RN professional deliver client or patient care under supervision or as delegated by the registered professional nurse. Based on the case study scenario, I would delegate clinical and non-clinical roles. With respect to clinical activities, I would require the UAPs to assist in repositioning the patient and taking and recording the patient’s blood pressure, respiration, temperature, and pulse rate. I will also expect them to provide emotional as well as support services to the patient’s close friends and families, who would probably inquire about the patient’s condition. The non-clinical activities of the UAPs include keeping the medical unit clean and orderly and collecting specimens for medical examinations (Bakr, 2021). The delegation of these roles should be done considering each UAP’s areas of competence and experience to augment patient safety and health outcomes.
The LPN working on the unit is a new graduate and has been employed for only 4 weeks. How would you collaborate with this nurse when delegating tasks for completion?
Collaboration within the healthcare delivery context entails working with one or more nursing team members, with the respective members making distinct contributions toward achieving a shared objective or goal (Prentice et al., 2020). Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) care for diverse patients under RNs or physicians’ supervision and work in various settings. In this scenario, I would collaborate with the LPNs to utilize their skills in the medical unit once the patient is transferred to cardiac and intensive care units (Vega Guyen Research, 2020). Clear communication with the team members would help support collaboration within the LPN when delegating the activities for completion (Hamilton, 2022). Since the LPN has been employed for only four weeks, I would a...
