Functional Behavior Observation for Leon

Case Study Instructions:

Read about Leon on page in your Chandler & Dalhquist textbook ( see attached chapter , the case study of leon is there ) for this week's readings and respond to the following questions: ( Ialso attached the readings of thwi week it's the power point presentations )

o What would you say or do with Ms. Collins in order to reduce her resistance to observation and to get her to allow you into her classroom?

o Now assume that the strategies you just identified for reducing resistance to classroom observations were successful; Ms. Collins let you in her classroom. Your observations are completed. Identify the function of Leon’s behavior and what are the strategies you want Ms. Collins to implement in order to reduce Leon’s challenging behavior and to increase his appropriate behavior?

Case Study: Leon
To overcome Ms. Collins' resistance to the functional behavior observation, I would approach the conversation with understanding and collaboration. When starting a conversation with her, I would acknowledge and appreciate her dedication to her students as well as her concerns that my functional behavior observation could disrupt the class. I would then reiterate that the intention of the functional observation is supporting her as she seeks to find solutions to Leon’s inappropriate behavior (Butler et al., 2002). I would further inform her that a functional behavior observation is a valuable tool that will help us gain insights into the reasons behind Leon's challenging behaviors and develop strategies to address them effectively.
Additionally, I would acknowledge Ms. Collin’s classroom management expertise and knowledge of her students. That is, I would inform her that her documentation of Leon’s behavior was insightful and valuable. Then, I would point out that the in-class observation will complement that information and give us a more comprehensive understanding of the situations and triggers that lead to Leon's behaviors. To further reduce her resistance to the observation, I would inform her that I would be open to a collaborative brainstorming session where we can come up with a plan that allows me to conduct the functional behavior observation of Leon while minimizing the levels of disruptions caused (Butler et al., 2002). With the input from Ms. Collin, we can arrive at the best timing and approach that would be ideal for everyone.
If Ms. Collins agrees to the observation and it has been completed, I can analyze the function of Leon's behavior based on the observations. The function of behavior refers to the underlying reason why a student engages in specific behaviors. From the observations, it appears that Leon's behaviors may be driven by attention-seeking and avoidance. Leon’s observed behaviors, like making sarcastic comments, seeking help from others, and arguing with peers and the teacher can be considered as attempts to gain attention from ot...
