The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), James Comey, knew from the start that reopening the case was going to be trouble. In reality, Comey said that his deputy director said, “You know you are totally screwed” (ABC News, 2018). The FBI director needed to decide whether to reopen the case involving Hillary Clinton’s mishandling of classified information on her private email server or not. He knew that the road he took was bumpy and that his decisions would significantly affect the outcomes of the United States of America’s (USA) 2016 presidential election. What is more, Comey needed to be neutral during the investigation so that it does not appear as if the FBI was leaning toward either the Republican or Democrat side. For sure, it was a challenging decision to make, and something needed to be done to clear the air.
The primary moral problem was determining who was telling the truth. Specifically, identifying the ethical issue was not difficult, but assessing the factual information available to make the right decision was the most challenging thing (Jennings, 2003). Amidst all the allegations that Donald Trump made against Hillary, Comey was destined to identify whether it was true or the stories were just propaganda meant to tarnish Hillary’s reputation. Another moral problem was to determine the values at stake. Comey had to ask himself, how will the investigation affect the election? For sure, the release of information about Hillary’s careless handling of sensitive and classified information was timely. It happened in the last few days before the election, meaning it was the final bullet for Hillary. For sure, reopening the investigation made Hillary look like the bad person, and it must have changed many of her voters’ decisions who instead voted for her opponent.
As a person becomes successful, one’s actions influence more people. These individuals are called stakeholders (Thompson, n.d.). In the scenario at hand, the primary stakeholders were voters, FBI, women, Democratic Party, and President Barrack Obama’s administration.
