Walmart around the World: Questions, Guidelines, Rubric and Notes for Zero Credit

 

Questions: Please discuss each of the three questions clearly using the question number in your submission.

1. Assess Walmart’s globalization strategy over the last two decades. Your assessment should be mainly based on the case. Additional research that can support your discussion is possible and welcomed with clear in-text citations and references.

*Notes: To respond to this question, you may consider the following points. Please do not include the following questions in your answer. They are simply meant to help you provide more substantive/integrated discussion.

― What are Walmart’s competitive advantages?

― Where was the retailer successful and where did it struggle?

― Evaluate the major drivers of success and/or failure in each country in each region. Think about how each driver is different in the US or how that is different from country X.

• Suggested approach: creating an analysis table(s) as an appendix and discuss the main finding(s) from the analysis in text.

― Is there any pattern that emerges when you look at Walmart’s experience across different countries?

― Can (i) location characteristics, (ii) competition characteristics, (iii) mode of entry, or in the case of acquisition (iv) characteristics of the acquired company explain the differences in Walmart performance?

― Are there any other institutional characteristics that can contribute to the success or failure of Walmart in those host countries? If so, what are they?

2. Discuss based on your own research with clear in-text citations and references. Which MNC(s) is/are Walmart’s major competitor(s) in a global market? How has Walmart been doing during the pandemic, compared to its competitor(s)? You may include a comparison table as an appendix.

3. Given Walmart’s experience as analyzed in question (1) and where it stands today as discussed in question (2), what should Walmart do going forward? What actions should Walmart take? Please be specific.

• The writer’s style has a clear and professional tone, using concise, grammatically correct language and syntax to convey complex ideas.

Walmart is a global retail giant that engages in several business processes to serve its clients. The company’s success is based on the fact that it does not rely on only one competitive advantage but on several of them. The company’s main strategy globalization strategy in the last two decades has been in terms of price dubbed “Everyday-low-prices.” The company offers low prices by reducing its operation costs compared to the competition. Its main competitive advantage was in its effective approach of merchandising their products via traiting. The company knew the products that were selling more compared to the rest and took advantage of them to announce its presence in the foreign markets. This ability served as a big advantage over the competitors, who were not advanced.
Finally, it gained a competitive advantage through its use of mergers and acquisitions as the expansion strategy. Its expansion in Mexico, Canada, Central America, Chile, and in Asia, Europe, and African countries. The company was mainly successful in countries that it used this strategy and struggled in those that it launched new stores before engaging in an acquisition. For example, its entry in Brazil was slow as it began by opening new stores before purchasing 118 Bompreco stores that were initially being operated by a struggling Dutch retailer, Royal Ahold. The patterns of success in each country in each region is evident in appendix 1.
Analysis of the company’s experiences across the various countries in different regions shows distinct pattern in which the company succeeded using its Everyday Low Prices (EDLP) model in countries belonging to certain regions and failed in others belonging to the same region. The company’s model was mainly successful in the Americas as more countries within this region embraced the approach. However, the Asian market proved to be challenging for the strategy and hence the company had to either exit or change its strategy.
Walmart’s differences in performance can indeed be explained on the basis of the market’s location, the competition characteristics, mode of entry, and characteristics of the acquired company. For example, the firm’s performance in the Americas was more effective than its performance in the Asian market because of the location differences. In terms of the competition characteristics, the firm’s performance in Germany was dismal partly because of the stiff competition from local retailers, such as Aldi and Lidl. The mode of entry also determined the company’s success. For example, its success in Canada can be attributed to its acquisition of 120 of 142 Woolco discount stores. Finally, the characteristics of the acquired company also plays an essential role in determining the firm’s success. Firms that had a good name before acquisition helped Walmart market its brand to the consumers. For example, during its entry in Central America, Walmart acquired a 33.3% stake in the Central American Retail Holding Company (CARHCO) and allowed it to retain its local identity.
