The presented case study illustrates the importance of the functions of management, planning, organizing and leading. Many entrepreneurs with dreams of starting their own businesses believe that managing a business is simple. This case shows what can happen when new owners do not pay adequate attention to important components of management.


The plan is not one in which the consultant tells Joseph Jackson that he should do this or do that or he needs to do this or do that but present in an action-oriented manner. Students are expected to make connections between the facts of the case study and concepts, theories, and ideas presented in the course material.


Required Elements to include in the Case Study:


  • Act as the management consultant, Justin Thyme
  • Using what has been learned in the course thus far, look at every aspect of the business depicted in the case study and identify all possible issues related to planning, organizing and leading.
  • Explain in detail how the identified issues that have impacted the business;
  • Students are expected to show what they have learned in the course by applying theories and concepts.  Be sure to support your reasoning using scholarly citations.
  • Make recommendations to Tom on how to improve the management of his small business.



Required Formatting of Case Study:


  • Create a consultant’s report that is double-spaced, 12-point font, and between five and six pages in length excluding the title page and reference page;
  • Title page with your name, the course name, the date, and instructor’s name;
  • Include a reference page
  • An introductory paragraph, a summary paragraph and the use of headings are required;
  • Write in the third person from the perspective of Justin Thyme;
  • Use the course material to support your reasoning.  May use outside sources.
  • Use APA format for in-text citations and references. You are required to use the e-text and at least two academic or highly respected business publications, for a total of no less than three references. Paraphrase and avoid direct quotes.
  • In citing sources, the page number/paragraph of the cited source must be provided;

Trait Theory - Leaders are Born. Natural born leaders =  EUGENICS

Great Man Theory – Believe that leaders are Male

Behavioral Leadership Theory – Opposite of trait theory. Leaders are made. Your actions make you a leader.

Situational Leadership – Understanding the situation.

Transactional Leadership – I’m leader and I don’t care what you bring to the table. (Military Leadership – Do as I say)

Times of Crisis a good approach but you must know your follower.

Transformational Leadership – Develop a relationship with the follower. Know your follower and understand them in order for them to follow. Servant Leadership – Taking care of his/her followers. Caring.

Path-Goal Leadership – Leaders responsibility whether the followers are successful of not. (Read about the Four Quadrants)

Charismatic Leadership- That something special that someone has. Visionary paints a picture with words.


Aspects of Leadership – Leadership Style

Curt Lewin – Famous social scientist – Named all Leadership styles

Charged with coming up with coming up with best national leadership style

Autocratic Leadership Style – Authoratative - Dictatorship - Give directions and leaves. Threats and punishment. Followers feelings don’t matter.

Democratic Leadership Style – Democracy. Open dialog. Takes too much time.

Laisse Fair Leadership Style – Anarchy - Give directions but not care. Very chill. Lack of direction.


Leader Power - Different Types of Power

Legitimate Power – Leaders power that is directly tied to a leaders power.

President Obama has legitimate power bc he is the president.

Coercive Power – Using threats and punishment to get things done. Spanking.

Reward Power – Giving a person what they want will give the leader status.

Expert Power – Your knowledge can make differences in the world. The more you know you can transfer that to power.

Referent Power – The leaders resources will assist with power.



Mindfulness Leadership – Keeping your mind awake.

Course Title:
Business Planning, Organization and Leadership
The organization of any business is influenced greatly by the happenings in its surround. There is the creation of new opportunities as well as challenges by these happenings for the business. The environment in which a business operates strongly influences the attainment of the expected objectives, internal functioning, strategy implementation as well as the business organization’s existence (Pasmore, Lafferty & Spencer, 2009, p. 1). The business environment involves all influences, events and conditions that surround the particular business and affect it. The business environment can be classified into either internal environment or external environment. The internal environment is comprised of elements within the business and is usually under the control of the business. They include managers and employees. The external environment consists of forces and institution outside the business which have potential or even actual impacts or interest in the ability of the business to attain its objective. The external environmental elements include dealers, distributors, creditors, suppliers and customers (Ghuman & Aswathappa, 2010, p. 35). For any organization to be able to manage both its internal and external environment and attain success in its operations, it must have capable leadership to direct them through pioneering changes (Pasmore, Lafferty& Spencer, 2009, p. 1). This paper seeks to analyze business aspects depicted from Tom’s Coffee Cup case study, identify the possible issues related to planning, organizing and leading; explain the impacts of the identified issues in the business and finally to make a recommendation to Tom on the way to improve his small business management.
Business Aspects Depicted in the Tom’ Coffee Shop Case Study
The main aim of Tom when he established the Coffee shop was to continually produce and also distribute the shop’s services and goods in order to earn profits under the existing uncertain market conditions. The case study depicts different aspects of business which include the exchange of goods and services, whereby Tom’s Coffee Shop offered coffee, pita sandwiches and hearty salads to customers in exchange for money. The second aspect depicted is profiting as the major objective of the Coffee Shop. At the initial stage the business was successful and Tom was able to meet the objective of making (Treviño & Nelson, 2011).
The third aspect of the business from the case study is that for economic success, the business needs to employ personnel with good business skills and qualities. It is for this reason that Tom employed Willie Cheet who possessed extensive experience in the business of food service and had as well been a local restaurant manager. The other aspect depicted is on risks and uncertainties that may face the business organization. The Tom’s Coffee Shop was faced with the uncertainty of loss as a result of change in demand due to poor planning, organization and leadership that Willie expressed. The final aspect of business derived is to satisfy the human wants (Treviño & Nelson, 2011). Tom started his business in order to produce coffee, food and other services in an attempt to promote the satisfaction of all the consumers.
