Introduction
The book, The Ninth Hour by Alice McDermott is a fictional story based on an Irish Immigrant in the USA living in New York City called Jim. He commits suicide and leaves a young family behind. There is a lot of themes from compromise, to love and replacement which have been advanced in the book. It is critical to mention that the religious author and a Catholic for that matter, has shredded the setting of the book to contemporary life issues facing people in society today. Further, the book has illustrated a lot regarding how people can make choices and live with them. This is a book review of the award-winning publication of a best seller book.

Alice McDermott is a renowned author who authored other seven previous books besides the Ninth Hour and the books includes; This Child of My Heart; Charming Billy which won the 1998 National Book Award, At the weddings and Wakes, Someone, After This, and That Night. She is a professor of humanities at the John Hopkins University at Richard Macksey. She was born in Brooklyn New York and attended St. Boniface School in New York and further her education at the State University of New York. She received her Master degree from the University of Hampshire. McDermott lives within the outskirts of Washington DC together with her family. Her husband is a neuroscientist and is blessed with three children. She is a Catholic and have written extensively about Catholicism. The book. The Ninth Hour was published first on October 19th, 2017. The author has also received several awards and accolades.
The main theme of the story as portrayed by the author is religion and love. The theme of love is manifested in several incidences. First, Jim commits suicide leaving his wife, Annie. Annie is pregnant with Jim`s child and later gives Birth to Sally. Annie also shows love when she starts to have an affair with Mr. Castello who is a married man. Out of love of the mother and the desire to see her happy, Sally poisons Mrs. Castello so that her mother can have happiness. She sells her soul to gain happiness for her mother who has been lonely for a long time....
