Open the attached to read the following short stories. These stories are found in our course textbook Backpack Literature but I wanted to give everyone a chance to keep up with the reading in case have not purchased the textbook yet. It's important that you have the textbook by week two since all of the assignments are connected to what you'll read in this book. All short stories in this book can be found online, however, as they are in the public domain. The textbook contains important information about how to analyze and write about literature as well as the stories and poems we'll read in this course, so you will be unable to complete the course successfully without having this book. In the meantime, read the following stories and respond to the questions below.

“Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid is a conversation between a mother and her daughter. The short story begins with the mother giving practical advice about how her daughter should run a home and conduct herself by doing laundry, cooking, dressing, attending Sunday school, interacting with boys and men, repairing and mending her clothes, ironing, and farming. The mother also gives insights to her daughter on cleanliness, personal conduct, making medicine, gathering food, love and relationships and earning a living. However, the short story also reveals instances when the mother gives stern warnings to her daughter, especially against becoming a slut, something that she believes her daughter is prone to. The mother also warns her daughter against singing benna in Sunday school and squatting to play marb...
