Perry focuses on the early depictions of the printing press and uses them as his main sources of information to explore the history of the printing press. Specifically, he utilizes three main early images; (1) the danse macabre that was set in a printing shop, (2) a printing press used by Josse Bade as depicted in his printer’s devices, and (3) a printing press drawing by Albrecht Durer in 1511 (Perry 27). Perry chose these three depictions because they are considered the most important images in the depiction of the printing press. The first depiction is valued for its date as it is the earliest existing printing press image (28). The last two are valued because they were linked to great individuals in the 16th century. All three are important to Perry because they leave room for manipulation and allow different and broad interpretations.
Perry’s main argument is that in the early depictions of the printing press, it is not just a technology; it is a human experience. His argument places emphasis not only on the printing press as a device but also on the people who were involved or affected by the device. Perry indicates that the printing press did not exist on its own because it had to be operated and used by human beings such as pressmen and compositors, among others (34). His argument allows him to look at the printing press from more than one perspective. He presents the early depictions of the printing press as a model rather than a representation (34). This allows him to interpret the information from different viewpoints.
