One Day of Life
In the book “One Day of Life,” Manlio Argueta describes the devastating state of El Salvador during the period of civil war. The author uses the fictional life of Guadalupe and her family to explain the real issues the people had to endure. In her middle age, Guadalupe begins writing a novel while living in El Salvador. Jose, Guadalupe’s Husband, is forced to join a rebellion due to the poor state of the economy. Together with other uprising members, Jose had to hide in the hills to avoid being attacked by the government.
On the other hand, Guadalupe’s son is murdered by the government even before the novel starts as it does not want anything published about the destruction. In reality, Roque Dalton, a close ally to Manlio Argueta, was killed for writing about the devastations. This action forces Manlio to exile in Costa Rica owing to his profession.
