In her novel, Lilly in the Snow, Yan Li has been able to portray the life that Chinese immigrants go through while in Canada. The book outlines the story of Lily, a Chinese immigrant living in Mapleton, Ontario. As a young immigrant, she is working her level best to survive on her own. To add to the challenges that Lily goes through, the author creates the character of her mother. The fact that she is in a strange country, it is expected that her mother would help her overcome the daily challenges. However, this is not the case since Li presents a strained relationship between Lily and her mother. As well, her environment is characterized by a quirky and vibrant Chinese community. Through the novel, the author has outlined unexpected changes and challenges that Lily goes through in an attempt to cope with the new environment. Lilly is able to come up with strategies for overcoming each of the challenges.
Besides, Lily is presented as a patient and determined character. Despite the many challenges that she goes through, Lily ensures to work hard to survive in the new environment. It is through her determination that she finds it easy to overcome the unexpected challenges. Lily is also portrayed as a protagonist through her courage to question about employee dignity.
