The overarching theme in this book is system failures that continue to occur not only in the united states but also globally. Sze (2020) argues that “unjust environments are rooted in racism, capitalism, militarism, colonialism, land theft from Native peoples, and gender violence” (7). This means that throughout history, the status quo has remained the same preventing actual change from making strides in the industry. This book thus highlighted a critical area that I have previously overlooked, creating a sense of self-awareness on the plight of human beings living in the world today.
The Notes section provides insight into the evidence used in writing the book and making its conclusion. For instance, water contamination leading to lead poisoning is mentioned in the Dakota case (Sze 116). It also touches on the government’s decisions based on other environmental cases in the United States as experienced in the Flint water crisis (Sze 129). The analysis of reports across areas affected by pollution shows the extent of the environmental injustice problem. The discussions are based on facts reported over several years, with accounts of those greatly affected in addition to the repercussions of failed government efforts to salvage the situations.
The book covers five major sections that include the introduction, three chapters, conclusion, notes section, and a glossary. The introduction lays the ground for the discussion by highlighting the main problem affecting the environment in America. It further highlights how the fight for environmental justice has raged over several years, with activists losing their lives for their stand. As a result, by understanding such historical perspectives, readers can gain a better understanding of the political, social, cultural, and economic factors involved in the issue. The role of dominant belief systems and ideologies that are the root cause of the problems experienced are widely discussed, paving the way for understanding the root cause of the problems faced.
The first chapter covers the different movements that protested injustices, such as that in Standing Rock, that garnered national attention. With the demonstrations involving more than 15,000 people, it represented one of the largest movements showing the level of disruptions that the pipeline would have on the area (Sze 25). The plight of natives affected by corporate drives for revenue further raised another issue of racism against indigenous people. Police violence followed the protests, with several activists and natives alike suffering from government action.
