The Book Review of Age of Ambition
The book Age of Ambition: Chasing fortune, truth and faith in the new China, by Evan Osnos is a non-fiction work that narrates about the social, political and economic aspects of the modern China. Osnos is a journalist and an author by profession who works as a staff writer for an American weekly magazine The New Yorker. On Amazon, the hardcover retails at $16.66 per copy. As a non-fiction book, the author has based the story on his 9 years period he spent in China and the lives of people he encountered while in China. The book title exemplifies a fresh desire for individual success for the people of China, which is an equivalent of the American dream analogy. The title elucidates the unending changes that have occurred in China and the ones that are looming to in future.
From an peripheral view of the book, the forecast that at one point the reforms on both the Chinese economic and political situations will happen simultaneously seem to have now materialized . In reality, Osnos’ narration is more intricate. At the onset of the book, the author suggests that the positive and optimistic perception of China’s transformation was not completely mistaken. The optimistic view of China’s evolution mostly leaned on the conception of politics with a narrow spectrum to capture a number of rare but weighty shifts that have effected changes in China in manner that are not obviously evident and noticeable as well. The author through his fascinating accounts on artists, journalists, and entrepreneurs’ profiles realizes the sprouting of the new Chinese society that was coated the search for dignity and identity instead of the typical interest for a political representation.
The book begins with an informative prologue and ends with a well a thought aggravating epilogue through its 24 chapters. The primary aim of the author in the book was to highlight China or rather take readers on a tour into China and Identify it clearly across its 416 pages. Osnos’ success in his aim is achieved to some extent because to be fair, capturing the true identity of China is a difficult task. Even so, the author succeeds in revealing all the significant changes that ensue in China. In another words, the book can be taken as a story of a country that has been told through the experience and eyes of its people.
The way in which Osnos has flawlessly managed interweave individual stories together with historical occurrences is exemplary and commendable. While reading the book, each and every change and event that China goes through is mapped and supported by a u...
