The Shining – Stephen King
“The Shinning” is a gothic horror novel that tells the dreadfulness of Jack Torrance’s family experience in the Overlook hotel. I believe Jack is responsible for his actions in this novel. He is the reason his family was at the hotel in the first place. We are told that Jack was once an aspirant writer and former prep-school teacher who struggled with alcoholism and anger issues (King 447). His anger led him to accidentally break his son’s arm in an attempt to discipline Danny. When Jack drunkenly breaks Danny’s arm, he feels sick and regularly acknowledges the incident as a pattern of aggressive, drunken behavior.
When Wendy, Jack’s wife, suggests taking Danny down the mountain because she fears for his health, Jack refuses, claiming that he will ruin his chances at redemption forever if Wendy makes him leave. He forgets that his actions have placed his family in the current situation. Jack also assaulted a student who made his tires flat. The incident resulted in Jack’s expulsion from teaching (Britannica.com). In this context, I believe that Jack’s actions (drunkenness and anger) forced him to look for a job at Overlook hotel, which is possessed by an evil spirit. Had Jack not been an alcoholic, he would not have looked for a job at the hotel. He would have sustained his teaching job.
The hotel transforms Jack from protagonist with sporadic bouts of antagonism to a full-blown antagonist as he willingly chooses to murder his family due to his deep-seated anger towards them (Britannica.com). Insan...
