Journal Reflections Name Affiliation Course Tutor Date Journal Reflections The book Introduction to Sociology develops theories to explain the occurrence of social interactions, events taking place and patterns used. Emile Durkheim shows interest in explaining suicide and its level of distribution as a social phenomenon. The theme of religion is revealed whereby a group of data conducted on people who ended their lives in Europe shows that Protestants commit suicide more than Catholics. Privacy is also shown in an incidence where most teenage girls use messages instead of making phone calls to communicate (Peter, 2015). In most cases, the population thinks that this mode of communication is silent. Theories in sociology help sociologists to understand the significance of social issues in various aspects of life (Crossman, 2011). In functionalism, the structure of the society is seen as setting designed to meet all the social and biological needs of the individuals that make up the entire society. Conflict theory explains how people struggle to meet their needs with limited resources available in society. Individuals must compete for everything including leisure and entertainment. The issue of symbolic interactionalism helps sociologists to know how communication determines association and the kind of relationships between people in society (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2106). Language and symbols help individuals to understand the different aspects and issues happening in the world. Social solidarity helps different groups of people to get close by binding through social ties. The good relationships originate from kinship, religion and shared the location. Emile used these aspects to show the difference in suicide rates in different settings in society. An example of an investigation conducted on various social solidarity groups reveals different rates of suicide cases. The data given by Durkheim helps sociologists to explain social patterns and the relationships in various social situations (Jones, n.d.).
