Introduction
In 1927 by Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse centers on members of the Ramsay family and their stay at their holiday residence in the Isle of Skye. Woolf's novels are the most innovative and ascertain why Virginia Woolf is considered one of the most important authors of the 20th century. The frustrations experienced by the characters and the themes advanced by the novel suggest that the world is intended for the average, simple man rather than for immortal or wealthy human beings. The novel's sentences are fluid, poetic, and events are coupled with sudden shifts and juxtapositions. Virginia Woolf uses stream-of-consciousness and metaphors to present human experience as a process of moving towards certain desires, some of which are unattainable.
To the Lighthouse focuses on the Ramsay family members and their desire to achieve things that have alluded them for years. Each character's desire is symbolized by the lighthouse, which is a power that controls the uncaring sea of the natural world and guides individuals' passage. However, even as the lighthouse stands still day after day, year after year, and season after season, it remains peculiarly unreachable. Although each character is frustrated by the lighthouse's unattainable nature, James' frustrations are much bigger because he has desired to visit the lighthouse for over a decade. However, when he reaches the lighthouse, he realizes that it looks nothing like it does from across the bay. The intertwining of frustration and desire as presented by the novel can be likened to human experience. People move through life propelled by certain desires yet, and it seems they rarely attain them. A person's life, then, is a process of moving towards and desiring to reach the lighthouse.
One theme that is consistently addressed in the three chapters of the novel is the subjective nature of reality. In a perfect world, philosophers argue that realism would be attributing objective existence to a subjective conception. However, Woolf uses characters to create a reality that is based not only on the opinions of individual characters but also on the accumulation of those opinions.
