New Cultural Movement and Elements of the "Newness"
Please read the two articles(In attachement). Attempt to answer the following questions based on your readings of Lu Xun's "Diary of a Madman" and Rou Shi's "A Slave Mother". As these two men, esp. Lu Xun, are considered representative voices of the "new cultural movement," please read the two short stories closely and use concrete textual evidences (short quotes with page numbers) to analyze:
What is new about the "new cultural movement"? What might have been the elements of the "newness" that seemed to be so central for the coming of age of a whole generation of the May Fourth intellectuals? For example, how would you compare Wu Jianren's "The Sea of Regret" with Lu Xun's and Rou Shi's writings?

Lu Xun and Rou Shi are some of the best known writers of the early 20th century in China. The two writers spoke on the need for cultural change and what would go wrong if the society did not change. Written at a period when China was trying to shake off Western neo colonialism, the two authors present a deep analysis of the new cultural movement that was emerging and the change of societal views (Schwarcz, 1986). This new cultural movement is well presented in Xun’s Diary of a Madman and Shi’s A Slave Mother.
In the Diary of a Mad Man, Xun talks of a society that did not want to change. In the story, Xun claims that he had been holed up in his house for thirty years. During this period, he did not have much interaction with the outside world, but was shocked when he emerged after thirty years and noticed that things had remained the same as he had left them.
