In the Parable of the Sower Lauren’s prophecy for her community behind the wall comes to pass (Butler, 1993). After the death of Lauren’s brother, Keith, thieves and pyro addicts attack the neighborhood burning housed and killing people. Laura gets her emergency pack and goes to search for her family. Many of the people she knew are dead. She then meets Zahra and Harry who tell that she no longer had a family. As they shared their traumatic experiences, they came up with the plan to travel north.
The journey north was about survival. Lauren notices that Zahra is street smart which comes in handy. Before being sold to her husband, Zahra used to live in the streets. The others are surprised by how quickly Lauren adopts and displays her survival instincts. Laura cuts her hair and pretends to be a man because it was safer that way. Harry and Zahra were used to seeing Lauren as a preacher’s kid. Harry was slow to adapt, and he was reluctant to steal or do what is necessary to ensure his survival. “But we don’t have to turn into animals, for godsake.” Lauren says to him, “out here, you adapt you adapt to your surroundings or you get killed” (Butler, 1993, p.182).
