Book Report for Kubler’s The Shape of Time
This book by George Kubler, The Shape of Time, is a reading material full of different concepts that are a fusion of art, art history, archaeology, and sociology. It discusses the notion of the style of human-made things with history.
From the beginning of the book, it was mentioned that all artificial objects would be looked at in their entirety, not only focusing on their usefulness, so all the other creations that exist for their beauty will be considered in the discussion of art and history. Kubler intends to view art as something more than a symbolic thing, which is how it is was viewed when studying art. Instead, he emphasizes that it should be studied and utilized concerning other disciplines. In addition to these, he also points out that the creations of man are always influenced, consciously or unconsciously, by what happened in the past that is part of man’s history. It is a fusion of related ideas which develops a sequence that gives shape in time. One of the many exciting parts of Kubler’s writing is when he used the metaphor “dead stars.” To further elaborate, there are moments in the art that we experience something that results from innovations or past concepts, emphasizing how art affects the present time.
