While pop music has changed since the 1970s, the growing popularity of Latino pop music from the 1990s resulted in Latina performers like Shakira becoming more mainstream (Cepeda, 2010). Even though, Shakira is a rock singer rather than a punk singer, and her popularity transcends both the U.S. and the Latin American audiences (Cepeda, 2010). Shakira not only represents Latina culture, but also Colombians highlighting that Latinidad and Colombianidad in the U.S. Shakira’s crossover appeal grew, without necessary being depicted in stereotypical categories like in the case of Hispanic actors and actresses, and this is mostly because of the emergent awareness about Latino (as) culture. Nonetheless, some of her music videos are still commodified and stereotyped find their way into mainstream popular culture, while globalization and transnational immigration has influenced how gender, race, and class are used to represent Latina women bodies in mainstream American media.
