Guidelines for reading report oneIn this reading report, you will compare the accounts of the Yuan (Mongol) dynasty presented in two chapters written by two different historians. The chapters are both posted in the Course Documents section of our UB Learns site. They are:
Jacques Gemet, A History of Chinese Civilization, 2nd edition (Cambridge, 1996), chapter 17, “The Mongol Invasion and Occupation” (pp. 360-384).
Moms Rossabi, Khubilai Khan: His Life and Times (California, 1988), chapter 5, “The Emperor of China” (pp. 115-152).
Write an essay that 1) evaluates in what ways the accounts are different and 2) discusses whether or not the differences are important for our understanding of the history of China. Be sure to explain clearly why you think the differences are important or not and cite evidence from the chapters to justify your argument about the differences. You can focus on one major difference or discuss several. If you like, you can bring in points from additional readings about the Yuan dynasty in your discussion of the chapters. If you cite anything other than what has been assigned for class (these two chapters and the Hansen and Gemet readings), be sure to include these others sources in a bibliography.

Book report-Mongols
The Mongols created a huge Eurasian empire, in the thirteenth century and unified Mongolian tribes. The success of the Mongols in maintaining power, allowed trade to flourish and there was increase in the flow of travelers to and from the Chinese territory. It was easier for the Mongols to conquer northern China, and as they made their way southwards they encountered more people settled and living sedentary and not nomadic lifestyles like the Mongols. Mongols exploited the people they encountered, but they also unified the area and increased the flow of people in Eurasia.
Gernet (364) points out that the Mongols installed a system of exploitation when they conquered China, but the conquest of East Asia was sow and gradual unlike Central Asia and parts of Europe. Even though, the Mongols adapted to Chinese institutions they instituted a system that exploited China and transferred money westwards (Gernet 373). Mongol domination of China was associated with profiting from the region the expense of the local people, but also led to the unification of Asia. Thus, the Mongols inadvertently led to the spread of Chinese techniques, the travel of foreigners to Chinese territory and the movement of Chinese to Eurasia. To Gernet, the Mongols were not concerned with being accepted by the Chinese, but Rossabi emphasizes that Khubilai wanted to be accepted and not be seen as a mere barbarian, which may have influenced him to employ Chinese advisers.
Rossabi (115) also mentions that Khubilai concentrated on China to grow the Mongol empire but Gernet highlights that the Mongols were more interested in exploitation of the Chines. Rossabi first looks into how Rossabi relied on the Chinese advisers and officials. To Rossabi, there was concerned with ruling and not me...
