Reducing Racial Prejudice
Racial prejudice is an adverse manifestation of racism. Racial prejudice involves discrimination where an unfavorable or discriminatory attitude and belief towards someone else or a group of people based on perceived ethnicity, skin color, or race. Such prejudice or bias tendencies are expressed towards people who are perceived to be of a different race or ethnicity. It is critical to fighting racial prejudice because of the negative consequences of racism on human integration, individual wellbeing, and coexistence. Racial prejudice and racism tend to synergize with each other. When racial prejudice is not managed, it fuels racism. Equally, if racism is not controlled, it exacerbates prejudice. Strategies to address discrimination based on race should be implemented via a multifaceted approach where individual attitudes and institutionalized should constitute the core focus areas.
There are various approaches to reducing racial prejudice. First, the strategies that minimize racial prejudice should address both institutional and individual causes of prejudice and discrimination regarding circumstances, situations, and the environment where they work, learn, or live (Teaching Tolerance, 2020). Second, the techniques for managing racial prejudice should seek to alter and modify the behavior of individuals. There should be an increased focus on motivation and capacity to influence others, but not merely increasing knowledge and awareness.
Third, the racial prejudice solutions should be geared towards controlling the disposition and behavioral patterns of the racial parties or groups involved. Fourth, the participants who reflect the racial, ethnic, and linguistic diversity should be engaged in resolving racial biases. Exchange programs and interactions amongst diverse races tend to decrease stereotyping and enhance positive feelings and readiness to mark discriminatory tendencies toward the other groups and social contact with the other group (Berger et al.,2016).
